วัดนี้เดิมมีชื่อว่าวัดมาโกก เป็นวัดที่มีปราสาทสูง 82 เมตร ซึ่งถูกสร้างขึ้นในสมัยราชอาณาจักรอยุธยา (1351-1767) ได้รับการบูรณะโดยพระเจ้าทักษิณ และเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นวัดเชง ต่อมา พระเจ้าพระรามที่ 4 ได้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นอารุณรัตชวาราม รัชวรามาหวิหาร ซึ่งมีความหมายว่า “วัดอรุณ”
