Herwin Gunawan Bio
Herwin Gunawan is a Human-Centered Building Performance Consultant and Founder of ALTA Integra, an independent multidisciplinary consultancy specializing in Architectural Building Physics, Acoustics, Lighting, Audio Visual and Information Technology. Sustainable Design through Passive Building Design Performance Optimization, including building thermal, daylighting, and natural ventilation.
Since establishing ALTA Integra in 2010, he has successfully delivered more than 200 projects across Southeast Asia, helping architects, developers, institutions, and global organizations create healthier, more sustainable, and higher-performing built environments. His work spans corporate headquarters, educational facilities, cultural venues, sports facilities, hospitality developments, and sacred architecture. His project experience includes collaborations involving organizations such as JP Morgan, Bank of America, DBS, Bank Indonesia, Meta, Spotify, Nokia, AstraZeneca, Western Sydney University, Jakarta International Stadium, Jakarta Cathedral, and Makassar Cathedral.
Herwin's professional approach integrates building physics, environmental psychology and physiology, and emerging technologies to optimize how people experience space through sound, light, thermal comfort, air quality, information technology, and audiovisual communication systems. He advocates a multi-sensory design methodology that aligns environmental performance with human wellbeing, productivity, learning outcomes, community engagement, and sustainability objectives.
As a LEED Green Associate and WELL Accredited Professional, Herwin actively promotes evidence-based design strategies that support Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). His work extends beyond consulting through research publications, professional speaking engagements, technology innovation initiatives, and industry knowledge-sharing focused on creating future-ready, human-centered environments.
His contributions have received international recognition through industry awards, manufacturer project features, technical publications, and professional collaborations across architecture, engineering, sustainability, and building technology disciplines. Notable recognitions include international lighting design awards and project features by global technology and lighting manufacturers.
His professional activities include research publications, speaking engagement, and interdisciplinary collaborations in human-centric building performance, and contributions to the advancement of human-centric and environmental design. Herwin has authored peer-reviewed research (e.g. Journal of Physics Conf. Ser., 2018), served on International Well Building Institute Sound, Light and Equity Advisory and WELL Faculty.
He has spoken at several events e.g. RECAV 2017 Acoustic Vibration Conference, University Guest Lecturer, and other speaking engagement. Recognized through interdisciplinary research publications, professional collaborations, institutional projects, and thought leadership contributions in acoustics, lighting, audiovisual systems, sustainability, and human-centric building performance across Southeast Asia.
Today, Herwin continues to advance the field of Human-Centered Building Performance Engineering, helping organizations transform buildings from functional assets into environments that enhance human health, wellbeing, experience, and long-term performance.
